The Journey of a Million Miles
The first involvement started during the spring semester of 2014 with the non-profit organization A Dollar A Tree for Haiti. This organization was an eye opening one to the lack of social concern for the environment of Haiti. The founders of the organization are Frantz Kenol and Former Ambassador Raymond Joseph have a great amount of patience and care for the reforestation process in Haiti. Major issues that I have learned about this process is the lack of public awareness, funding, and consolidation. First, there are many organizations that are in the state that have the same objective to combat deforestation, but there are also variations on how they solve the issue. A Dollar a Tree for Haiti develops the reforestation process by educating the public about the stop the dangerous process of deforestation by their practices. As with the issue of public awareness, I was able to intern for the organization as a manager of the social media sites and promote the efforts of the organization via the other student associations. I learned so many aspects of the connection that the environment and politics interplay.
The experiences and connections from A Dollar a Tree for Haiti that I made were due to another event. During the National Haitian Student Alliance of 2015, I encountered the founders of that particular organization. The different influenced that I acquired during the conference propelled me to test my leadership skills an executive board member of the Haitian Student Organization. After that experience, I was invited to be part of the planing committee for the 2016 NHSA Conference. As a committee member, I reinforced the skills teamwork, project management, outreach, and event planning as a member of the Workshop Committee. We planned a simulation to mimic the economic structure of Haiti in which the student had the chance to build another economic structure within a framework that is similar to Haitian law. This was also incorporated with the logistic help of strategist, Archange Antoine and the White House Representative Karen Andre. This experience facilitated the global action issues of poverty, class, and race; it also facilitated great conversation and leadership development.
Finally, the other experience that I have had was linked to the planning committee due to the fact that I was planning and interning in tandem. During the summer of 2015, I interned for Dr. Eduardo Gamarra. This experience has a key influence on future research about aspects of social media and gender inequality of the Haitian election process. I was required to research the different patterns of public exposure and the background of each Haitian presidential candidate. This process was another learning experience to me in the importance of development in the state. One development that I noticed is the lack of equal representation of women in politics. There were six women who were involved, which quickly went down to four after a few records were challenged by the electoral court. There were cases of increased security for the women within the presidential race due to the increased cases of violence towards women candidates. In the future, I would like to research the impact that impartial gender representation has on the economy of developing countries; especially with the growing influence of gender equality in many development goals in different NGOs. This internship provided me with more questions than answers because the presidential elections were halted this summer, along with the crisis that was occurring between the Dominican Republic and Haiti on the issues of human migration. Working and researching became personal due to the dire ordeal that the people were facing.
